Delylahs 2nd Birthday Request

OK EVERYONE!
This year the theme is Preemie clothes and hats and blankets.. as many handmade as possible!
I began loom knitting about a month ago and stated making hats... I am asking that everyone make or purchase preemie clothes to be donated at the 2010 NICU Renuion~ So lets get started.. I will continue blogging our progress.. please send this to friends and family who would like to help... ask you local knitting groups to help! I will post pics as I make items and send me your pics and I will post them of what you are making for the NICU!

Here are the FIRST 3 Hats I made... I have made 11 so far.. I will keep taking pics and making things!

DELYLAH'S STORY

Delylah Jewel Bice was born April 15th 2009, she is my 4th child born via C SECTION. She was born a beautiful and healthy 8lbs 9 oz. I was in bliss with my beautiful baby girl! However the next day was the scariest day of my life! Delylah's nurse became concerned with her glucose levels. I was a breastfeeding mom thinking all was perfect.. however my milk was not coming in fast enough and I was unable to catch her up.. she slept alot due to the low sugars. They whisked her off the NICU for care... we spent day after day in the NICU trying to balance her sugars.. and THANK GOD we did ! However my experience in the NICU changed my life... I would sit rocking holding my plump little darling with her IV's and nurse her all the while listening to dings, bells, alarms, and nurses constantly in and out of the area tending to these tiny little lives trying to hold on! Little lives growing in plastic boxes. I can not describe to you the heart wretching feelings I felt daily. I became so aware of every little change around me in the room.. I learned that things could always be worse in any situation you are in and think its the end of the world... Those babies fought every minute... heart rates jumping into wild digits setting alarms off every minute.. the cries that sounded like a kitten crying.. LIFE IS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN ME AND MY PROBLEMS.... When Delylah graduated from the NICU I was a changed mother... I was changed woman... a changed human... I made a vow to do all that I could in my life to help others even when my life was down... knowing I can not change the world.. I decided to start small... VERY SMALL... with NICU babies.. so here is my attempt at that.. So for Delylahs first birthday instead of toys or clothes she didnt need.. I asked everyone I knew to ask everyone they knew.. to help me .. I asked them to purchase from Walmart a Glidder Rocker and Ottoman combo... the donations came pouring in.. coworker teamed together to purchase them. Family and friends bought them and I couldnt have been prouder.. we had gold plates made that stated " In HONOR of NICU graduate DELYLAH BICE " accompanied with the names of whom ever had donated that chair. We were able to spread the donated chairs out between several NICU's across Austin. Well .. it is time again.... and this year I am asking that instead of gifts for her second birthday, that this year preemie clothes and hats be donated... Every item I have choosen has a special meaning.. the CHAIRS: I was a fortunate mommy to have been able to stay at the hospital with Delylah her entire stay... I stayed in an extra postpartum room so I could nurse her on demand... The one comfortable cushioned glider the nurses always tried to have ready for me became a icon for me.. I would spend hours and hours sitting in it holding her and rocking her until shift change when they would have to kick me out... That chair was my comfort! The CLOTHES: One evening when I came up to feed her I walked up to her not swaddled in just a diaper but laying in a cute beige gown with little animals on it.. Tears FLEW from my eyes.. my hands shook .. to me.. it was a feeling of NORMAL... I grabbed the first nurse I could see... " who dressed her? She looks so beautiful..." I couldnt stop! I called everyone possible took a thousand pictures... the nurses explained they are donated outfits and wonderful volunteers come and push a little cart around and dress the babies... Oh it was so wonderful... I met another mom in the area who said the same thing.. someone had put a beautiful little hand knitted hat on her baby... It meant to much to us! Thank you for helping me with this venture.. thank you for choosing to be part of something bigger than yourself.. THANK YOU!
